Women in Construction Forum

Our Mission

The Women in Construction Forum seeks to retain our existing women and grow our women population.  We carry this out by providing them with a safe place to meet, network, learn and share their experiences.  Women are making significant strides across all aspects of construction—from working in laborer roles to progressing to leadership roles. This forum is dedicated to empowering, supporting, and celebrating women in construction by providing the platform necessary to nourish inclusivity and a sense of belonging.

Success stories

Megan, 1st Period Apprentice
Megan’s journey into construction began with her love for working outdoors. “I served a prison sentence and was part of the Second Chance program, which introduced me to LIUNA. When I learned about the wages and benefits, I knew this was a great opportunity for me… a second chance,” Megan shared.Currently, she is a 1st period apprentice working for Rosendin Electric, with aspirations to become a foreman or project manager. “I hope to become a great leader of a team that is skilled and efficient,” Megan added.Megan's story is a powerful reminder that second chances can lead to incredible opportunities, and she is excited to continue growing in the construction industry.
Soraida Romero, 2024 Graduate
Soraida Romero successfully completed the Laborers Apprenticeship Program in December 2024 and is now working as a foreman for Hoffman Structures. She takes great pride in her leadership, having recently overseen a crew of eighteen and, most recently, a crew of seven. Her team is wrapping up their work on Project Eagle, a fabrication project for Intel Corporation. When asked what drives her to continue her career in the construction industry, Soraida shared, “Being a woman in a male-dominated industry makes me want to succeed. I want to prove to myself that it can be done!”Soraida is also proud to have inspired her son to join the Laborers, and he has followed in her footsteps — now working as a foreman as well. Her message to others is clear: “If school isn’t for you, there are other ways to make a great living. Construction is one of them!” Congratulations, Soraida, on your continued success and for paving the way for others!
Lindsey, 1st Period Apprentice
Lindsey shared that the construction industry has given her a fresh start in life. With several family members working in construction, she knew there were opportunities for her to build a better future. Through Arizona’s Staff Zone, she began as a “daily laborer,” gaining experience with various construction companies. She quickly realized the wide range of work and growth opportunities available in the industry. Her journey took a positive turn when her parole officer encouraged her to attend a job fair, where she met her now Apprenticeship Coordinator, Matt Gordon. Reflecting on her transformation, Lindsey said, “I used to be in a negative state of mind, to the point of self-destruction. This career has brought me new hope. I am excited to be a part of something new. I’ve met so many great people and I’m learning so many new skills.”When asked what motivates her, Lindsey shared, “My kids and family are my main motivation. The desire to keep learning is also a big motivator.”Lindsey’s story is a powerful example of how the construction industry can provide not just a career, but a new beginning.
